Christians are commanded in 2 Corinthians 10:5 to “take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ”
What does this actually mean and how does a Christian do it?
What does it mean to “Take every thought captive to obey Christ?”
It means to combat a carnal mindset and actions, we must capture our thoughts and align them with Jesus’s teachings. When we catch ourselves thinking in earthly terms, we should halt those thoughts—empowered by the Holy Spirit, who helps us recognize falsehoods and errors due to our understanding of the Word of Truth.
We should then take control of these thoughts through Jesus, resisting conformity to worldly standards, and instead, transform by renewing our minds, as described in Romans 12:2.
#1 Scripture Meditation:
Regularly read and meditate on the Bible. This helps to internalize God’s word, making it a natural filter for thoughts. Psalms 119:11 states, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
#2 Prayer
Engage in constant prayer, asking for guidance and strength to think in ways that honor God. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages believers to present their requests to God, which leads to peace that guards the heart and mind.
#3 Spiritual Discipline
When is the last time you did a fast? When’s the last time you buffeted (disciplined) your body to make it your slave? Are you exercising self control? Are you mortifying the deeds of your flesh?
#4 Walking in Repentance and Confession
Acknowledge and confess thoughts and actions that do not align with God’s word, seeking forgiveness and asking God though the power of the Holy Spirit to help you kill sin.
#5 Community and Accountability
Surround yourself with fellow believers who can provide support, correction, and encouragement. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
#6 Conformity to the world
Are you to worldly minded you are of no heavenly good? If so, your flesh will not be able to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
Ask the Lord to reveal to you areas of worldliness that have been snares.
